Background and Purpose

In 2003, two annual $1000 scholarships in the name of Mark David Jones were created for San Francisco State University students majoring in Broadcasting & Electronic Communication Arts (BECA).

Mark HeadphonesAs all who knew him will attest, Mark was passionate about his music. And while he was devoted to his profession as a media buyer in the advertising industry, Mark's dream to someday make music an integral part of his career was never realized.

The purpose of these scholarships is to help two young people each year, similarly motivated by an intense love of music, to achieve what Mark never got the chance to do: integrate their passion for music into their media and communications careers.

Scholarship History

Mark's family (father Ron, mother Annemarie, and sister Meghan) joined together with Bay Area Society for Television, Advertising & Radio (Bay Area STAR) — the nonprofit association serving the industry Mark worked in — to create the scholarship soon after Mark's accidental death in December 2002.

Since Mark was a BECA major at SFSU in the late 1980s, we decided to award the scholarship to San Francisco State University students and began working with the BECA Department at SFSU in the summer of 2003 to implement the program.

After a tremendous amount of work to help us get off to a great start — including a vital role in raising and managing $10,000 in donations from Mark's colleagues, friends and family — Bay Area STAR turned over full responsibility for the scholarship to us, the family of Mark, in 2004. We are forever grateful to STAR, and to Nancy Bell and Karie Kindred in particular, for their tireless work to help us launch this scholarship program.

Part of the SFSU Foundation

In July, 2005, The Mark David Jones Scholarship became an official part of the SFSU Foundation, the nonprofit organization that handles donations for all official San Francisco State University scholarships.

One reason we made the decision to become an official part of San Francisco State University's family of scholarships was to enable donors to the Mark David Jones Scholarship to receive a full tax deduction for their contributions to the Scholarship via the SFSU Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation.
